The National Theaterweekend is an initiative of the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds and the Nationaal Theater Fonds, and made possible by the culture lottery of the Netherlands: the BankGiro Loterij. These funds together decided to give the Dutch theater sector an impulse by organizing a weekend in which theater is celebrated. Aim of this initiative is to strengthen the bonds between public and theaters in their vicinity.
The Theaterweekend took place for the first time in 2016 and was a great success right from this first edition. The aim of the weekend is to introduce the whole of the Netherlands to the theater and to show them how fun, beautiful, valuable, moving, funny or fine theater can be. Since the start of the weekend not only the number of visitors grows ( last edition attracted 135,000 visitors), the number of participating theaters continues to grow.
